Now that you have a Sable

The initial extraction process has been started for Sables into their own Purebred, American and Grade herdbook at ADGA. If you plan to show or participate in performance programs such as DHIR or Linear Appraisal with your Sables, you need to keep a few items in mind. As Purebred and Grade Experimental does have been extracted to the Sable herdbooks, it is your responsibility to ensure that registration certificates presented at shows, or information sent to DHI record centers is correct.

SHOWS:
Animals extracted into the Purebred and American Sable herdbooks must be shown as Sables, which means their registration certificates must be updated in order to show. According to ADGA rules, they cannot continue to be shown in grade/experimental classes while you wait for registration certificates. They cannot be used to assist in making a sanction official for any breed division other than Sable or AOP (which includes Sables) division. Show officials will not be able to make that determination, and showing under incorrect registration papers could jeopardize the winner of the division.

DHIR:
Information on extracted animals has been sent to USDA-AIPL. Records obtained while in the Experimental breed have been transferred to the new Sable breed designation. For lactations beginning this year, you will need to "correct" the breed designation on your test sheets. The letter, "C" is being used for Sables as the breed designation. You do not need to indicate whether the animal is a grade, American or Purebred, as that information has already been sent. In most systems, all that you need to do is correct the breed designation, as the numerical portion of the registration number has not changed.

LINEAR APPRAISAL:
In order for 2005 scores to be entered into the database, Sables being scored will need to be appropriately registered.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE A SABLE?
ADGA will be sending postcards out in the next few weeks indicating that you are an owner of one or more Sables, now that the extraction process has begun. This postcard will go to the owner currently on record of those animals that would be 10 years old or younger in 2005. For registration purposes, the decision as to whether you want to have your registration certificate revised is yours. Offspring will automatically be registered with the correct breed designation whether or not you have had the certificate revised on the parents. It is strongly encouraged that you have certificates revised if you are planning to transfer ownership of the animal. As the animals are extracted, updated information is sent to USDA-AIPL, so you can query www.adgagenetics.org or the USDA database on-line if you are unsure. Use the breed code CC plus the 7-digit ID number (add a leading zero if there are only 6 numbers in the ID) for the USDA-AIPL site, and follow the usual format on adgagenetics.org. At this time, we are still finding and adding Purebred and American animals, with work on the Grade Sable book still to go. If you find an error or omission, please let us know.
